Don’t we get lost here in philosophical details? To what degree do we need the calculation to be 100% correct?
The question was whether the curves used in practice for trimmed surfaces are an approximation in the mathematical sense (distinct from any numerical imprecision issues that arise) - and indeed they are.

Of course use computers a simplified algorithm to tackle this issue - but does the resulting surface look that much like a bad approximation?
You’re begging the question here. It’s either an approximation or it isn’t, I didn’t say anything about good or bad. For most practical purposes, 1.00000000000001 is a pretty good approximation of 1. But if you maintain that those two numbers are equal because it makes no difference in practice, I must say we indeed are philosophically at odds.
