Thoughts on Mothership design?

I think I have the surface aspects under control, but am having trouble deciding on a general form. It will be a science vessel housing a crew of several advanced alien scientists. I am mostly considering the exterior right now. I think I will be using the wireframe modifier quite a bit, for example as structural support for some tanks that will be on the surface, as well as emission maps for adding ‘windows’ and other glowy areas. I could potentially get into ultra-detail by making some depth impersonating parallax textures. I want sort of a massive feeling to it. Any thoughts appreciated.

For a “massive feeling” you have to play with the camera values and find the right focal length, distance and a bit depth of field will get you 50% of the target.

You can start with some basic shapes and then then hope that “geometry nodes” will take care of the rest of the details.

I still haven’t come up with a basic shape so I started making greebles. I have tanks and grids and panels and supports and a few glowing things. I am trying to stay low poly and texture economical so I made a vertex paint material and am using “dirty vertex colors” for the metallic map and the diffuse, through a brightness contrast filter. One question though, …It used to be that you could vertex paint on a per face basis in face select mode, but that appears to no longer be the case?

You could activate paint mask select the face and quickly paint it. Dont know theres is a face paint mode.

That sounds about right. Thanks.

I think I found my overall shape…will be posting in WIP soon:

I like this shape- it’s a bit like an aircraft carrier, a bit like the command ships in Star Wars Episode 6, nice and classic while still being interesting
