As it’s kinda boring to copy and paste an url into another browser window, here’s a request to all of those hosted by geocities and co:
Please, create an html page that displays your picture. Nothing more than . And then give us the url of that page. If you do so, it’s the same effect as direct link to the picture.
I think it’s at your advantage to do so, because people who see a geocities image link won’t maybe take the time to have a look at your work.
See you, dudes.
IS
Hmmm I’m not realy sure HTML’s are better than pic’s, I think it’s a general policy of Geocities to unable access. But you don’t have to Cut and paste… just click the link and when the error message appears, just ckick the address in your browser address bar then click Enter (that is all).
Does anyone know how they achieve this effect at geocities? Is it a check for “referring url” to see if it is not empty then they show the stupid “no linking page”?
Very annoying
@ner - I think it does help to use html page - I saw an image in “finished” forum today that worked without copy-paste, and it was on geoc’s…
Actualy, what geo doesn’t want on their web spaces is stored files without any link to it. So if you make a page with a image displayed on it, it works.
Otherwise, you have to tell me how you manage to display pictures on websites
And also, when I click a link that display the error message and then click ok in the adress bar (or enter in the adress field) it doesn’t work. Now I don’t know if it’s a local issue or if it’s “geosucker” that’s guilty. Anyway, I think the best thing to do is html link to a page that displays the pic.
I just drag and drop the link in my address bar. One step.
But I agree, HTML pages would be nicer if you can do 'm.
also I read somewhere that renaming the image to .txt or .html tricks gc into letting it through, but the browser is smart enough to figure out the real format if it’s in an <img> tag (or an [img] tag in phpBB)
yes it does
some have suggested that putting a ? at the end of the filename works
(test)
(/test)
doesn’t look like it does
but what I do is a redirect page at :
which I call with
hidden in a url link like so:
If I see someone on lycos geocities etc. I don’t bother.
zero-d
some have suggested that putting a ? at the end of the filename works
I couldn’t see your pic but if you click the geo link, then add the ‘?’ at the end of the address in the address bar of the dummy page, hit enter, it works.
%<
If I see someone on lycos geocities etc. I don’t bother.[/quote]
well what if I am unable to ftp at the moment? Until that gets worked out I am stuck with geocities
wait, did you copy the url into a new window and then add a ? to the end?
actually I believe you did something very similar, go to the linked address (??) and then added a ? to the end, and pressed enter. But, I only linked to my redirect page so it should have worked either way
though I did put inline an image (which doesn’t work (in IE), the ? at the end doesn’t fool geocities… kinda)
oh, and I have referrer logging disabled in opera, and it can be disabled in mozilla-derivatives usually too.
wrong. geocities is NOT the only one that has an upload tool. try brinkster.com
30megs, for free. no ads. asp support.

Umm, so I can’t complain about how many times I got rid of the blaster worm yesterday, because I would tell others how to remove it.
I can’t release python scripts that write files because unknown input or certain unforseen stimulai could “damage” (overwrite an important file), “interfere” (eat system resources)
I cant publish most any form of media that is not static (jpeg, gif, png). Though it is odd I didn’t see ogg or midi in that list.
I can’t consider myself z3r0_d on a website on their servers
only 16.7Mb per day? and 500Mb per month. Geocities gives me 3Gb/month (“metered hourly”)
and I have to agree to get their spam (I don’t need any MORE). The only e-mail I ever recieved from geocities was when their free services lost ftp access.
I also find it particularly interesting that I am responsible for not linking to web sites that would violate thier terms of service. Could it go far enough that linking to a website with a .exe file somewhere on it could result in deactivation of my account?
though this clause (in both brinkster and geocities t.o.s) I find a bit of a nuisance
[you agree not to] upload, post or otherwise transmit any Content that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright or other proprietary rights of any party;
but mainly because of the laws. If someone considers “security through obscurity” trade secret, how do they know, and why do they care if I complain about how it isn’t secure. (though they could be sued due to my actions, security through obscurity is stupid)
now I may have of emphasized many the grey areas in the brinkster terms of service out-of-proportion, but I consider geocities much better. Especially with opera or mozilla because their advertisements do not work (they don’t appear in opera at all).
ok, now in direct reply to blendmax. I will be going to a paid host, but not this second (nor the next few). Until then geocities serves me fine.
(oh, and geocities used to have FrontPage 2000 and webdav support, but they complain that since the changes in FrontPage 2002 (supposedly you cant have websites at www.geocities.com/username/ they have to have their own domain) FrontPage support (and webdav with it) is not avaliable for the free accounts, which means I cannot delete certain files)
