To Underscore or to Period?

Is there an option or a preference somewhere to decide whether your render file name ends with an underscore _ , or a period . ?

For example:
FileName_0001.png
or
FileName.0001.png

Personally I prefer the period, and I’m aware that I can simply manually change it to a period, but it’s pretty annoying to have to do it ever single time because Blender seems to want to force me into using an underscore. It would be nice to give the user the option to choose what their preference is.

You can manually set the number and placement of frame digits with #. So to prefix the digits with a period it would be FileName.### which will result in FileName.001.png.

Render Output Documentation

Right… but the problem is that Blender seems to be underscore by default. Meaning I need to change it every time.
Example:
-When I choose the path for my render, I pick the path and at the bottom of the Blender File View window I put in my file name.
-Something like this FileName.
-I press accept
-then what do I see in the Scene Parameters? I see the path and file name with an underscore!?!?! Hu!?
-Why is it forcing me to use underscore?
It would be nice if they offered a preference option to choose underscore or period.
I guess I could type .#### everytime but I find it strange.

Maybe you havent encountered problems with additional dots in filenames but there are some, specialy on windows side with mail attachments. Sometime windows cant regognize the file type then.
I would try to avoid using dots in filenames.

I’ve worked in many professional settings where it was mandated to have the naming convention as:

FileName.framenumber.format
not
FileName_framenumber.format

…and it’s a windows work environment.
I have nothing personally against the underscore. I do find it annoying to not have the option to choose a period unless I force Blender to.
