Toon Shader sprites

I’m making a few characters for a fighter game and instead of hand drawing frames I decided to use Blender’s toon shader. Shader is limited to 22 colors lines are done with freestyle branch although the built in line options works fine also but has less options. Lighting is done with environmental and indirect lighting ticked.

5*'s - wish this could be in the banner!

I could watch the brief animation all day.

please, can you teach how to do this? I joined the forum just to learn how to make 2d animation with blender!

Quite a compliment thank you sir!

Whoa this is awesome - bizzarrely I’m trying to do exactly the same thing at the moment to make a character for winmugen!

You’ve got a lot further than I have though ( mainly because I’ve forgotten how to model properly… )

looking forward to seeing the other moves - perhaps he can transform for some kind of special attack ?

That looks awesome! Now I want to learn freestyle :stuck_out_tongue: 5 stars from me
on thing though on the second animation on his right foot at some point 2 lines show up and disappear again, dunno if that’s on purpose

That’s just a freestyle bug with that part of the leg being in between variables on different frames. I’ll edit those bugs out when I get to the final version.

could you post the .blend file?

looking great! i’m using blender for a sprite-based game as well, 8 characters with 23 moves each! my brain has been exploding! i’ll post a link to the game when it goes live (it’s going to be a flash game on a website for a kids show).

i’d love to hear about other people’s processes for making the spritesheets though. obviously blender spits out image sequences, and most tools i’ve found simply tile those images onto a massive grid, but that ends up leaving a lot of whitespace, and you have to manually calculate the coordinates for all the various moves. is there any software out there that automates all that??

wooww preaty impresive…
Could u please please share a scene with a simple sphere or cube using the shader u used ?? I need to do somthing similar but cant make my scene look like it. Im skilled on modeling  but I do trash when it comes to materials :(…
look this is the model i need to shade like that for a figthing game too… “Mugen”.

this model uses texture and toon shader, rendered with ambient occlusion…active at factor 1 but its not the final look i wish…and could you please explain to me what is freestyle branch…

by the way … for the edges you my find usefull to do a … Fake Edge with material node u can find a guide on youtube im tring to do it right now.

""could you please explain to me what is freestyle branch… “”–>

Hi,

you have all the info about freestyle branch here:

I think that you should find everything you need. To get the latest version go to graphicall . org.

I hope that would help.

nice, Thanks. i will be doing some test…by the way. i got a preaty nice looking edges using Fake edge with material nodes

AWESOME! Great work, me likes mucho!

very cool. How about some SFIV cell shading next?

Nice modeling and shading! I’d like to see a tutorial and an example scene. Cheers.
