Toon shading and Texturing (as in Journey PS3 game)

Hello,

I’m trying to model a terrain with a similiar lighting and texturing as in the PS3 game journey (attached images). I’m new to blender and texturing and all, can anyone point me in a general direction, i.e. tutorial or techniques which can help me achieve this kind of look? I’m talking mostly about the sharp colour edges on cliffs and dunes in the epics posted.

I assume it can be achieved with smart postprocessing, but what are the basic underlying techniques? Is it a classical toon shading look? As far as I know, the original game does not actually have any cell-shade edges or similiar.
