In going through the 3DView tutorial, I noticed that when I place the default monkey mesh (Add->Mesh->Monkey) - and view through the different views (top, left, front) - the monkey is not oriented as you would expect and not like is seen in the 3DView video tutorial.
I have a fresh install of 2.44 on Mac OS X. This only seems to be a problem with the Monkey mesh, btw. The Cone and Torus meshes seem to be oriented correctly.
When placing the monkey, top=front, font= top. Just wondering if there is a global setting I have messed up or if this is expected - before I continue with the tutorial I want to make sure I haven’t messed something up.
Yes you should know that whenever you add an object in Blender it is viewport specific . Not only the front/side/top views but also the user view defines the orientation of the object added .
You can try this by using the MMB to orient yourself randomly to the global axis then add -> Monkey . You will find that Suzanne the monkey head will always face you no matter what the orientation you may be in . Now this may seem odd at first . But actually you can use this behavior to your advantage when modeling . Like if you set the User Preferences to rotate at a certain degree when using the 4/6/8/2 Numbpad keys to rotate in the viewport …
