totally newbie-light bulb wolfram wire??

hello,i’m a newbie in Blender,actually it’s the first 3d i’m using & learning so far so i’d be grateful if you told me as detailed as possible how do I manage to suscesfully create a lamp seen from below,namely the light-bulb is my main concern.I can’t manage to get a good looking bulb.I modeled the shape wich is simple to do ,i set transparency and stuff and now i’m trying to place the wolfram wire inside the bulb.It’s a lattice deformed mesh and now what do i do next to get the illusion of incandescence and yet to be able to see the wire as the real thing.

it’s really nothing to show,it’s just a modeled light bulb and a wire inside.I don’t know how to make that wire look incandescent.I tried with setting the emit slider but didn’t get results,just time-consuming renders.

my first problem is to set the materials to look like real thiny glass(what is a bulb made of) and next i plan to make the wire inside glow.I can’t get the bulb look like a thiny glass object,just like a glassy globe(not empty)How can i make it seem like it is made of thiny glass?In the documentation is written that assigning a blend texture to the mesh,then make it affect nor and stuff like this but it’s written for 2.31 and i got really confused.
Help!

What have you currently done to make the glass bulb look like glass???

You need both RayTrans and RayMir… You can see through glass and it reflects the surroundings…

One issue with reflections/refractions is that a lot of times it may not look good only because there is nothing to reflect/refract… so if you work with mirror stuff… make sure there’s something else there or all it’ll do is make your object blend into the background.

actually in the past few hours,i managed to make it look transparent and also it reflects slightly the surroundings but yet there isn’t much to be reflected.That’s not my concern yet.I’ve set a lamp light inside the bulb but i’m not happy how the light is spread out of the bulb.I don’t know if the bulb isn’t transparent enough but i’m pretty sure it’s a matter of setting the materials.
i’ll try more until i get successful.

oh,another question:in 2.37 reflections still need env maps and empties or ih has been changed to a more easy way?

Name the steps you’ve been through to make me understand easily.Also it should be transparent,reflect the surroundings like real bulbs do,and so on.I can’t seem to get it right.May be one of you can help me.Thank You.

-also,if one places a lamp light inside it should pass through the transparent material and lighten the chamber or so .

OK RealThor, how’s this? Not bad if I do say so myself. It’s not 100% yet, I have to fix up a few little things that most people won’t even notice. awesome!Very,very nice!if you could make a tut out of it to have all the steps and methods of modeling and setting materials and lights it would replace a real meal for the noob like i am.Anyway,if you could get the .blend file it would be of some good as i don’t really want to use your bulb but learn how you didd it myself.
Some questions:
-the bulb is modeled with nurbs?
-the aluminium thing below is done with the screw command or just a spin of a profile and then by moving some vertices down?
-how did you do the glass look like glass?what were the settings in the shaders/mirror transp and textutr/map imput/map to tabs and what else should i know and i didn’t ask?
-ah,and if you put some surroundings like a room the halo thing would spread light on the other objects?If you set an emit value vould it be enough or you’ll need to place the room with all the objects on another layer and place a light in the bulb’s place and set it to apply light only in that plane?

RealThor, you’re going to laugh at how easy it was to make. Basically I got a plane, put the photo of the bulb in the background, deleted 3 of the 4 of the plane’s vertices, selected the last vertice and with my mouse, while holding down the Ctrl key, traced the outline of the bulb. Then in the top view, selected all vertices and spun it round 360 with about 14 steps. Selected all vertices and press w key to remove doubles and finally Ctrl-n to recalculate mesh. That’s about it.

The base of the Bulb was done is a similar way but using the screw method in the front view. Although I have to say, the top and bottom ends of the screw require some manual tweeking to get right.

yes very easy indeed,but it looks so smooth i thought it was nurbs.Anyway not the modeling is the hardest problem to me but materials.How did you set the parameters?for glass?For aluminium stuff?

Now I have to give credit where credit is due, the material settings come from Sonix, who was kind enough to donate the material settings to the Blender Community. You can download Sonix’s material blend file at http://www.free-webspace.biz/sonix/Cars/Blender234CarMaterialLibraryR1.html

For the Bulb, I used Sonix’s Head light glass material settings, which in my opinion is spectacular! And for the the base of the Bulb, believe it or not, I used Sonix’s “Speedo glass” material settings, which I tweaked a bit.

You can spend hours reinventing the wheel, but you don’t have to when you have a cool hard to beat library like Sonix’s. See Sonix’s README file for further instructions.

Also before I forget, when you render it helps if you have “Ray” switched on.

And lastly the light settings, for that I simply studied SPKjason’s light settings from his JasonFlareLED.blend settings, which I mentioned earlier. Like I said you don’t have to reinvent the wheel everytime. Don’t worry Realthor, I’ll send you the Bulb blend file in the next couple of hours. Right now its dinner time.

and how do you import a glass material from the.blend file?
are there other such helpful resources?Materials like plastics,rocks,metals,i don’t know,stuff?-with all the parameters like ior and speculatity and so on pre-defined for you just to tune to get exactly what you want…
There should be a whole such library with .blend files for different areas like human slin,cars,etc-just to pick from blender and tweak.

To add material settings to your scene is quite simple. While you’re in your scene, you Shift-F1, then look for Sonix’s Blend file you already downloaded and unzip, look for the “Material” and click on that. Then right click on the material you want, if it’s more then one then hold down the shift key while you’re right clicking. That’s about it.

To add them to your mesh, select your mesh, then in F5. Now next to the default “MA:Material” you will see a tiny button with the up/down symbol, click on that and you will see all the material setting you imported from Sonix’s Blend file. You can tell, because the materials you imported will have Zero next to them, which means they haven’t been to any mesh as yet. Now select the material you want to assign to that particular mesh and you’re done.

BTW, do you know how to assign more than one material to a mesh?

There are some material links at the Blender.org site under “resourses”, but Sonix’s is about the best one. However, I do have a good human skin blend file with all the material settings that I download from the Blenderman site before ceased to exist. I can send it you if you want.

Wow, I didn’t think my library would be used for other materials outside of car design.

So you’re saying that there isn’t any other good material’s .blend file?Shouldn’t there be created then one such blend file by the comunity witch to include as many materials as possible,structured on different layers different categories?It would be very nice.
