Transferring my setup from Mac to PC?

Hi all,
I had a big scare with my Macbook Air suddenly not turning on, so I want to build a dedicated pc to use Blender and I’m trying to understand how I can transfer all the files and data to the pc.
Is it a very difficult operation?

Hi,

You mean you want to tranfser all of your data from mac to windows, is that right?

Wow that was quick ::
Yes that’s right
Even though I don’t do heavy stuff like animation or anything, I’m not sure the Macbook Air M1 is safe to use with software like Blender.

I’m just living here, nevermind

I am not that fimilar when it comes to an Apple technique, honestly, I’ve never been using Apple PCs, but only gadgets. But I can assume since you’re having a Macbook Air with M1 on a board, your hard disk, unfortunately, soldered into your motherboard which makes it impossible to connect it straightly to your PC. And what’s more worse than that, your Mac isn’t waking up, is that right?

The magical word backup came to my mind… (no icloud ?? )

when did i my last one ?? … Ups… i’m busy now…

Funny, but it seems Intel is prepared for cases like this. :joy:

If the question is just about blender, you should install the same version on windows, copy over your current settings / configs and all blend files you created to continue working there.

Under Windows the config is stores in the %APPDATA%/Roaming/BlenderFoundation/Blender folder, for other systems you can look it up here:

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/blender_directory_layout.html

Yes of course backing up everything that’s on the MBA is my first order of priority.
But then I want to build a reasonably priced pc around a 3060 ti for my Blender stuff, si I’m trying to understand how hard it is to transfer my setup from mac to pc.

That’s why I panicked, especially after reading that the M1 has a known issue of doing that. Luckily, after bringing it to the Apple Store, it turned out it was “just a bug”…
But now I need to backup everything on the mac, and build a reasonably priced pc around a 3060 ti dedicated to working on Blender, so I need to understand how to transfer my files, data, config, etc to the pc

Ok, as I wrote above, copy the config. The whole configuration and addons are located in subfolders of this directory, so porting it is very easy. The installation folder of blender itself holds no customized data.

Thanks, I was afraid it would be a headache

:smile_cat:
ohh everything’s fine then… i was just refereing to the…
