I want to write a little game with a worm walking around.
I know how to model and animate the worm.
Now I want the animation to be rendered into an animated gif with transparent background.
How do I do this ?

You can create gifs easily with GIMP. Just render the images separately, and then create a gif with them. This thread should help you with the transparent background: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=78868
