Transparent Material in Cycles (3D view)

Hey everyone, first time posting - hopefully I’m not in the wrong place here.

I’m working on a project that contains several glass cases that are acting as displays for other objects. My problem is that I can’t seem to find a way to treat one material (glass, in the case) so that I can see through it while in Materials view. Currently, the glass material shows as a solid colour, so placing objects inside the glass is difficult since I can’t see them.

I’ve tried to go into the settings panel on the material itself (which is used across multiple objects, so making each object transparent isn’t what I’m looking for) and changing the Alpha, but it has no effect in the 3D view; or at all, as far as I can tell.

Is there a way to make one material see though in the 3D view?

Thanks in advance.

You could use the transparent shader instead of glass shader in material view

You can use wireframe view

You could use solid view and set the material viewport alpha to something <1

If you’re wanting to put one object inside another, wireframe might be the best view to see the positioning of the objects in relation to each other.

Unless there’s some particular reason why you’re wanting to see it in material view.

for cycles
you need to set object to transparent
then in mat panel you need to lower alpha value
then it will show object glass as transparent in viewport
