transparent materials question

I’m modelling a snail body. I want the eyes area to be more transparent than thicker body.
Is it possible with blender to make transparency dependent of object thickness?

I don’t believe there is a way to do this by object thickness but…

In the Texture buttons there is an option to let the texture affect the alpha value. Basically white parts of the image would be transparent and black parts will not. (or visa-versa) So, if you used Blender’s texture paint mode to paint a new texture where the body of the snail is grey and the eyes are lighter grey and mapped that texture to “Alpha”, I think you could achieve the desired effect. And of course, ray transparency must be enabled as well
