Ok so I’m new to blender anyway, but this is my first tree… Any pointers would be nice. I will be putting it in the scene I’m working on below. I will also be making my first character model in this scene.

try a texture but looks nice so far
Interesting, I will try that
The bark should receive more texture-variations and you could move the lighting and shadows, too. It might be a good idea to play around with the camera, the tree is right in the middle.
May just try some different perspectives. Just my 2p
Unwrap your model, also moss isn’t flat like a tube. You would have to add some geometry to it. Maybe some alpha planes…then normal map/bump map and spec map maybe. Anyway getting such realism isn’t easy…
I dont know if you can tell from the picture but, I did use hair particle for the moss. Ive messed with the normals and textures on the moss too. Would it be better for the moss to be a straight texture and not “grass” ?
And yes I undeerstand the scene and placing of the tree doesnt look all the good yet, im just trying to get certain things finished and in the scene before I really mess with light and positioning of my objects and camera view.
I would recommend using a procedural texture, with a color ramp.
I made this using a simple color ramp on a cloud texture, with particle hair (I assumed you used particles for the moss).
Nice effect, simple settings!
Thanks a lot, I will mess with the color ramp some more.
I’m not sure what version of blender you’re using, and I can’t remember if 2.49 has the capacity for this setting, or even if it exists, but if you are using particle hair, and using interpolated children, there are some settings for the styling of those children (in the children panel). I used the “braid” setting with a really low threshold. It kind of kinks the hairs together giving it a messier look.
