I am new to Blender (2.42a). On the Noob to pro tutorials index, Learn to model section, Mesh modeling, Tutorial “Creating models with photo assistance” figure 2.3.2 I would like to know how the triangular edges are created in the top and side view of the wolf. Also what is the purpose of creating these triangles? Thank you
Would like to clarify my question. On the lower left side of theattached image, how you make the triangles or (diamonds?) on the 3 faces and what is the purpose? Thank you

The triangles were probably introduced into the mesh by a knife cut (Shift k) to the adjascent face. The purpose of triangular faces, as far as I know, is to provide pinching when animating and artifacts on a render. Actually, triangular faces provide endless hours of entertainment, in attempting to remove them from a complicated mesh. A real challenge, something like an advanced soduku puzzle.
Creating triangular faces in your mesh is not a good thing. Sometimes, there is no way around it, especially in low poly models. If low polycount is not a goal, then extrusion or the loop cut tool will add geometry for details without introducing triangular faces. The knife cut tool can also be used to create quad only cuts, but it takes some planning. Usually, though, a simple knife cut through one or more parallel edges will create triangles at both ends of the cut.
The tutorial appears to be about using reference images, it does not appear to be about good modeling technique. I’d recommend you skip it, and move on to the next one.
