Trouble placing an image on a mesh

I am following the Pixar Eye tutorial and I have run into a problem. I am trying to apply the iris image to the iris object. I selected the image, opened the UV face editor, loaded up the image and unwrapped the mesh. Now, in UV face select mode, I can see the image perfectly aligned on my mesh. But when I exit to object mode and render it still appears plain white. How do I make the texture appear on the object. I can provide screenshots of where I am if I am not very clear.

I think you should add a texture to your material and choose image, select your uv mapped image from the load image button and set the map input to uv.
