Trouble with lighting a scene

I’m clueless when it comes to lighting a scene and I’ve been trying to properly light the image below, but with much difficulty. I wanted to make the ground and background lighter without making the scene blown out. I also wanted to make the lighting on the letters less harsh. I’m rendering with Yafaray and the scene is rendered using direct lighting. I tried using photon mapping for GI but there was never enough balance between the shadows and lights.

The second image is a screenshot of the settings and scene. (Uploading the blender file didn’t work). Right now, there is a spot and sun light.

If anyone has any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Well the simple answer would be to turn the lights down a bit and balance them to achieve the look you want.

You might also consider using one of the sunsky background methods. You could then use the skylight to lighten the shadows and have more control over the contrast.

I found out the issue was that AO was off.
Thanks for the input though! Using sunsky actually helped me with another one of my projects
