Trying to create a thin cover over detailed object

I have a fairly detailed model that has some very curvy parts. I want to create a kind of thin cover that adapts snuggly over it and possibly have it printed. It would be like a tight cover to protect it.

I have tried modeling a thin plane over it, subdivided a lot and then used solidify and shrink-wrap modifiers but it doesn’t seem to really give me what I need. Would it be best to create a subdivided plane and use cloth dynamics?

I just figured it out. I duplicated the outer surface mesh, deleted unwanted vertices and added a solidify modifier.

You can also duplicate the mesh,remove unnecessary geometry and use displace modifier
