Thanks to the bad ass coders who are designing the new gui for tuhopuu.
I’ve been using it for the past two hours and I feel like I’m using a much more professional application now, the buttons are tied in in a much more organised way, The colours feel more unified, the sliders are now upgraded from drab to uber cool and things feel generally more eye pleasing…on the whole it feels much more Swish!!
Oh yeah, and it seems a lot more stable than 2.28a to boot (at least on my system)
I can’t stand that arrangement either. The old one had the advantage that once you’d learnt where everything is it was fast to use, all the buttons were just right there. I’m also not keen on the tabs in the button window.
I like the fact people are thinking about all this though, but I have to say that layout looks like a programmer designed it to be clean, not for a user to use it efficiently.
Yes, but you have to bear in mind the fact that as an application becomes more advanced, screen real estate becomes a big issue, and as a result the GUI has to be completely re-thought. Lightwave has pull down menus like this, and there ain’t anything wrong with Lightwave…it’s a simple matter of progres.
I totally agree the thing needs thinking about, and I’m glad some people are experimenting, although I’m not impressed with the results as yet.
My feeling is that it (UI redesign) will happen naturally as new things get added, such as what happened with the shader business. At some point something big will be done, and will need a redical overhaul, but I’m not aware of any projects of that kind of scope in the pipeline.
I’ll admit that on a personal level I’m not prepared to re-learn where everything is unless there’s some new capability as a result.
My final issue is that I don’t think Blender ought to try to copy any other 3D app for the purpose of trying to appear more professional. I’ve got a friend who works as a discreet reseller, and he actually believes that Blender in its current state looks like one of the most professional 3D programs (over discreet’s line certainly). What people perceive as good looking UIs is entirely on a fashion basis (grey out icons this month) so I don’t think jumping on the bandwagon with each new thing is something to be encouraged.
On the other hand, if someone were to alter the way some of the widgets work (as opposed to just appear) into a more sensible way (I can’t think of one, but there must be) I’d be first to applaud.
One of the reasons I like Blender is it’s relative lack of menus inside menus, a la most Adobe products. Cinema 4D shares this flaw, great program, where did I leave that last light setting? And, the fact that you’re usually forced in such programs to look and complete on spec at a time, often losing view of other aspects.
Haven’t loaded this newest T version yet to see if it’s going that way, but please don’t do this to Blender.
I must say I quite like the new feel of the latest version.
There’s only one hting, my materials get fucked up some how hen i open an old blender scene, into thisversion…
As far as I can tell, very little has been changed about the display buttons other then where each button is on the screen. And there organization now makes a lot more sense (related buttons/fields are grouped).
In other words, the buttons are still “all there in front of you”, it’s just that they’ve been moved around.
The only major difference that I can see in the display buttons is that the pre-sets can now be customized, which I think is absolutely wonderful!
To be honest it’s got little things I really object to though, like inappropriate use of drop downs, where you should use radio buttons (the oversampling thing). It wouldn’t mess up the display to have all those (4!!) buttons there, and it would be more immediately obvious what the options are.
Actually, a mayor overhauls IS in the pipeline for 2.3…that’ll be in 2 months.
I’m the onde responsible for this layout change and I agree it might not be the best thing for workflow. my 2 main motivations were the need for space and a cleaner layout so beginners can make at least SOME sense out of it (the old layout just was a big cludge).
I expected harsh reactions and I don’t mind them being made, I just ask you to look at the layout not as a blender-pro who knows where all the buttons are. if you still object to it after that,…it’s open source, we’re open to suggestions
