1150+ tutorial links in many languages and growing all the time.
I (IamInnocent) have been off Blender for some 3 months and I haven’t catched up with the beat yet. Anyway, this is the new, enhanced list. I’ll be back with more info before next Monday, promised.
Lot’s of clicks : easy.
The real work will come when we’ll have to categorize each tutorials but I think that I have a good scheme to do this ‘naturally’ ; it is going to be much harder to convince enough people to help : I may use up all the psychology that I have in the process.
But I am confident and that’s usually a good sign.
IMHO it would be better to convert this all to a database structure. Stefano already made a nice concept for that.
but this is probably something that never gets done anyway, so…EXCELLENT LIST!
It already is a database if you search in the manage bookmarks part Mozilla/Netscape. For the rest, our first task is to keep the links alive, bring in as many as we can, make more data like keywords and description.
That’ll already be something. Time is on our side. The list will only get better, never worse.
If Stefano has something I guess that we all be willing to have a look at it.
First off, you don’t need my benediction to do whatever you want.
I’d appreciate if you’d satisfy my curiosity though
Right now the list is a Mozilla bookmark file. This means that it is already a fully searcheable database through Mozilla and probably any other flavours of Netscape. It also means that it should be quite eazy to extract the information from it to include it in another database system.
Now the questions I have :
What sections of the database would be separately searcheable ?
Right now, with the limitation of using Mozilla, one can search globally or separately the urls, the keywords and the descriptions.
What criterias would be applicable to searches ? Right now one can apply to any of the categories enumurated above :
contains, is, is not, start with, ends with and doesn’t contain.
How easy would it be to add new data ?
How easy would it be to remove outdated data ?
Both are presently very simple tasks.
How easy, if possible at all, would it be to verify the validity of the links periodically ?
Right now a couple of mouse clicks and all the links can be checked.
How easy would it be for anybody who wants to work on the list to do so?
Right now pretty much anybody can volunteer any kind of contribution anytime.
Are we still be able to offer the list in a format, bookmarks or favorites, that anyone can include easily in their own browsers ?
Although I like Mozilla, I don’t think many people use it currently. And even those who use it, may not be familiar with all the functions of Mozilla.
I was thinking of something like a search engine (sort of) where you can search by catergories. Catergories could be things like textures / animation / modelling, etc
Allow users to rate the links (maybe on a scale of 1 to 10).
Should have a way to remove dead links / add new links.
Like I said previously, if people are interested, I can attempt to do it - and everyone can give suggestions for it. Don’t expect me to create google - it will be much simpler.
My point isn’t to impose the use of Mozilla but to underline that the links are already in a database which would certainly be an advantage to fill in the records of your database automatically (bit of script around ‘grep’ ?).
I also wanted to point out the functions it has that we should try to keep or, better enhance.
As for how to use it, I was thinking of making a small tutorial by the time we’d be finished creating the necessary keywords unless we had by then another database system.

A classification that would operate on keywords like Google or a classification like Yahoo directories ?
Allow users to rate the links (maybe on a scale of 1 to 10).
There are so few tutorials on one given subject that the time saved would be small. OTOH, few tutorials, even the most official, is really complete and ignoring a poorly graded one might mean missing an essential information. In other words, what real purpose would a rating system serve ? Tutorial authors try to help ; there are already too few tutorials in many areas ; should we discourage those authors who don’t feel like being judged ?
Should have a way to remove dead links / add new links.
At the very least… and who will do the work ? The number one problem is such a list is not searchability but maintenance : they all become outdated very quickly and so the maintenance should be the easiest possible.

Everybody will encourage you… I’m sure.
I think that a good many will actually use your system. Do it but find a way to make the maintenance easy otherwise it will have a short life. When designing the mechanism to input the data, make it easy to synchronize with the list we’ll maintain automatically and make the data updatable by many people as even that simple operation will tend to be neglected with time.
I asked for suggestions, but you are giving me questions. Nevermind, will do something (a quick and dirty script) and let you have a look, then you can give suggestions or something. Anyway will keep in mind the issues you have brought up. If really not workable, no harm done.
Will take a couple of days (have to do it in my free time).

That’s a wonderful list, I never knew there were so many tutorials out there! But it is a rather big job to read through the list to find whatever one wants, so a searchable database wouldt be just heaven !
Keep up!
By the way, I’ve seen a couple of other open source projects over the years were nothing seemed to happen in months and development was slow as he**, so it is just awesome to see the Blender community at work. Gotta love you, guys!!!
Oops ! They really were suggestions…
If I made them questions that was because I am under the impression that databases are no problem for you so I was inquiring about the features you had in mind and suggesting (clumsily I see) the ones I liked best.
If the script is in Javascript then we could probably start with a basic tool and enhance it, likely quite a bit.

Just one question: I have some tutorial links to post (that aren’t in the list already). Should I post them in this thread or in https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4624 and it will be picked and included here ?

AFAIK, the three of us are keeping an eye on this thread. Nevertheless your linking to the old list works just as fine in practice and is a prudent move since there always will be somebody unaware of the changes, no matter how much they are advertised.
Your links are excellent and bring to the fore the question of those turorial that are non-specific to Blender but still quite usable. Until now the Blender tutorial kept us quite busy but such a resource just can’t be neglected.
I encourage anybody with any knowledge of such links to post them here so we can include them.
I’m glad you liked those links, I was afraid of getting some sort of ‘take those non-blender things out of here!’ response. %|
Now, about the Layout of the list, and without entering into the database/no database discusion, I would like to sugest a better way to categorize the links, because separating them based on web-sites just doesn’t make any sense at all, functionality-wise speaking.
Example Classification:
[>] Interface Related
- For the absolut Newbe
- Intermediate and Advanced.
[>] Lighting, General Enviroment & Rendering (those cool toturials on how to create weather conditions goes here)
- Using External Renders
- Radiosity
[>] Real-Time Engine
[>] Special Fxs
[>] Python & Plug-Ings deployment.
[>] General 3D Articles, White Papers & Reference Sites.
I offert myselt as a volunteer to help categorize and maintain the links.
By the way, I’m writting a tutorial on ‘Advanced Armature Stetups for Bipeds’ and another one on Blender based UV-Unwrapping is waiting on the pipeline. The first one should be completed within a month or so.
You’ll certainly never get that from my part : I’m only for all that make the matter progress and refusal of any helping suggestion would be extremely counter productive and downright inamicable.

Indeed, there is no classification at all.
A ‘main’ list must exist for me in order to be able to verify periodically the validity of the links automatically. The reason for keeping the tutorial under a folder of the site where they reside is only motivated by this need.

I see two interesting point coming out of your example :
The first one is that you introduce new categories that we haven’t even started to explore yet , mainly the Game Engine and Python. In those two forums here there are already an ongoing effort to establish a links list. Should we include them in our own undertaking ? Do we have the human resources to insure that such a mega list will be kept updated and growing ? Should we aim even further toward resources like good .blends, textures… ?
There I go with my questions again : hopefully this won’t be as disconcerting to you as it was for ThE-UnknowN…
The second point, that you certainly found out yourself, is that it is very difficult to imagine all the good and useful categories needed on one hand ; on the other it is even more difficult to find the right hierarchies. That why I favor a search engine but these too have their shortcomings.
I offert myselt as a volunteer to help categorize and maintain the links.
That would be great.
As you may have guessed the question of a classification have been discussed already but nothing conclusive has been reached (the simple gathering of the links and the building of a fruitful strategy that leaves all the doors open had to come first.)
Classifying the links will amount to a lot of work and it wouldn’t make much sense to leave you alone to do it. Would you mind a pm so we could coordinate our efforts ?
If you want to write me something use my email rather than pm that overflows when work keeps me away from the puter a couple of days in a row. [email protected]
