Tutorial: Photorealistic Texturing by Leigh van der Byl

This is an incredible series on texturing written by Leigh van der Byl, orginally posted on CGchat.com. It is not specific to any app, although NewTek asked her to re-write it for the Lightwave community.

The majority of the lessons can be applied in Blender very easily to help you improve the quality of your renders. Some terminology is different, just as it is from app to app, but you should be able to understand how it coresponds to Blender.

I hope this helps someone. Enjoy.

Photorealistic Texturing For Dummies

Yes I’ve seen this series. Great series thanks for posting it here. For some readon when I saw it I didn’t think to post it here. Shame on me and kudos to you.

No problem. She did a wonderful job explaning in detail. Now I just have to produce models worthy of such texturing efforts! As you well know, modeling, texturing, and lighting have so many aspects. Its good to find excellent resources on each element.

Hey that’s a hell of a good tut’s series over there…

Thanks ec2…

Spyros.

I looked at it, read something like “NEVER use procedural textures” and closed the window again

Too bad Goofster, really good texturing series that shows how to paint your own textures, really goes into the different parameters that make up a texture, and is based on the work of Bill Fleming and her experience as a texturer in production. I learned how professional people texture and alot on how to use these techniques in Blender, making my understanding of Blender textures and materials even better.
If you read more you’ll see why she chose not to use procedural textures in this series and there are some arguments about that in the after comments both by her and others. My personal opinion is to not judge the value of her tutorials on that one statement.
Paradox

paradox,

You wrote exactly what I was going to, and you also saved me from defending my post of the tutorial. Once community members read through it I think they will find its really is one of the best resources for texturing anywhere.

o well, I’ll stick with the texturing Bible: digital texturing and painting

Hi there,

I found this site when looking through my site stats

Goofster, I wrote these articles for beginners to texturing, and I think that it isn’t a good idea for beginners to use procedurals, because I feel that if they use procs, then they will not fully understand what they are doing.

I believe that the best way to learn theory is by doing things yourself - ie. in the art of texturing, the best way to understand the theory is by painting your own maps. I have absolutely nothing against procedurals whatsoever, since I use them extensively myself.

I am in the process of writing a book (which is only going to be published at the end of next year), and since this book is aimed at beginner to intermediate, I am writing very extensive chapters on procedural textures (found in LightWave, because the book is LW-specific), since I know that they are an essential part of the process.

Many people got the impression that I am against the use of them altogether, when what I actually meant was that I am against teaching them to people who know nothing about texturing, since they are complex and a good understanding of texturing theory is required before they can be utilised properly

WOW! The great Leigh came to elysiun and posted a reply!! We are not worthy. (Insert bowing emoticon here).

This is a great piece by Leigh and should be read by any, and all CG artists. That is all that can be said.

LOL
Hey, I haven’t seen you on CG Talk for quite some time… I still have to do a texture with Eddie skin some time

And stop bowing dammnit! I’m only human :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow nice to see Leigh here. Looks like I didn’t have to defend her texturing articles as she is perfectly capable of defending her viewpoints herself. Good to see you in our part of the woods.
Paradox

Well, I think everyone is missing the main point here. To ec2…are you calling us dummies , here? Nice tutes… but anything that starts off with (insert skill here) for dummies has never rested well on my eyes. I did however “sneak a peek”.

Well, I missed all the action on this thread!

Leigh thanks for joing the Elysiun and giving us insight. I recommend anyone who has not gone to www.cgchat.com, visit and search on Leigh’s name. In general CGchat is full of talented people (just as Elysiun is) using nearly every application out there.

Seval, that is the name of the tutorial. I posted the name of the tutorial and the author’s name.

I know ec2. Just having a little fun. :stuck_out_tongue:

Cool. I thought I offended you. I’m glad I didn’t. Blend on!

I am the insignificant significant one…no one can offend me
