I don’t get the texturing part of the tute tho. You say you choose procedural textures, but then you use an outside texture. I thought procedural meant doing everything in blender with either plugins or just tweaking the material sliders.
I know I’m being fussy here, but I looked up the definition of procedural as pertaining to programming and got this:
a high-level programming language that requires the programmer to specify the sequence of operations that the computer must follow to accomplish a specific task.
If you use a pic then you’re not specifying the sequence of operations, the pic is so to speak. This makes sense in my little blonde head, but I might be wrong. I do sense a bit of pride in the blenderheads that don’t use any pics and do everything in blender, stating that they used all procedural textures and implying that using a pic is an easy-out.
I don’t mean to say you took an easy way out, in fact making your own pic is harder to do than doing everything in blender, I just wonder what the definition of procedural is in reference to this.
Well…here is the skinny on the procedural biz. I too thought that the procedurals refered to the wood and marble like effects but according to Ton this is not so (yes I am using his name in vein…he is probably going to kill me). Apparently procedurals is Blenders in-house texturing method that is used when mapping a material. Having said that, whether you are using an image texture or not, as long as you are not UV mapping than you are utilizing the procedural method. So if this is true than procedurals is a mapping technique rather than an affect on a materials color exclusively.
As for the discussion about which method is easier than another I would definatley have to say that it depends on the project in addition to the effect that one is trying to achieve. I dont neccesarrily choose the “easier” method when it comes to anything regarding my art work ever! I would hope that everyone reading this also chooses quality over the easier method when creating art. Personally my work is not something that “I need to get done” but instead it is something that I want to do and share with others!
As far as the whole image texture stereotype I will say this. I think that people are wasting thier time by simply taking a photo of something and poorly mapping it onto a make-shift mesh. In that case, to me, it is very obvious that they are being lazy. Why even bother? Now, you take that same photograph, in addition to about 20 others, and bring them into photoshop to create a jawdropping series of image textures complete with thier own custom spec and bump’s, then you will find that your “make-shift” model could probably pass for one of the best pieces you ever made! Put that same level of craftsmanship into the rest of the scene and your in there! Its just like lifting weights…if you work out your bi-cepts all the time (we have all seen these people in the gym and if you are reading this and you are one of these people please…dont do that anymore) then you are going to end up looking pretty strange in the long run given the fact that you have neglected the rest of the body!
Great piece Landis. Very informative and well laid out and especially easy to read.
I could not agree any more on this statement. I try to do this on every texture that I do. I make custom bump maps, spec maps, etc. It’s the little things that make your work stand out. You can add so much to a texture by playing with it in PS or GIMP. Add some dirt, some paint, some chips, etc. Just slapping on a tileable texture from a website is just a waste of time. I especially like trying to make my own textures from scratch. It gives you more control and lets you do what you want, not what someone else has taken a picture of.
Again Landis, great piece. I have it saved on my laptop for future reference.
well, if any one is capable of writing a tutorial regarding this so-called “tileable” textures… that would be great, or simply guide me to a proper website that has one.
Hay landis…thanx a lot.
Thanx
Note: Hope no one will get agnrey me waking up this thread
OK, I think I know !!! …
putting the same version of an image one beside another or surounding it should look as they are only one piece without being able to tell the trasition borders where we are actually jumping from one image to the exact match of it that is on top of, below of, or beside it.
sorry for the poor explanation of my understanding :(. In fact I was asking about how to create such a tileable images. I have a feeling that it involves a lot of work, but I was just wondering what exactly I should do in order to come with such a tileable image.
One more thing, you are not including the Reference Map in your website. I was stuck there because I don’t have the magazine since you are refering your tutorial’s readers to its CD in order to get that Map. I think I have seen it once here in elysiun, I am going to look for it now… thanx again for your efforts.
By the way, it is mainly your works and others that make me stick with blender, anyway, I am still learning!
Looks fantastic , I have this suggestion , many of the HUGE images would be better saved as a gif format , your images will be alot clearer … I am speaking of the pages with a lot of text in the image and the screenshots of blender …
The front page for the tutorial section is blurry and almost unlegible at my resolution … I would have sliced the image , place the image as a background image and put HTML text over it . and use CSS styles to keep users settings from screwing up your page … This will also improve your search engine ratings as pages that are mostly images often go over looked even with good meta tags and descriptions .
This would save your surfers a hella long wait . and save you some bandwitdh if your paying for it .
Shoot me a PM and I can show you what I mean if you want .
BTW , your airman character is amazing … hats off to you man
WOW thanks alot for the input man. I will see what I can come up but right now my wife and I need to go catch a flick. I dont expect you to do this but if you want feel free to download my PDF version and do what you are talking of to it. I understand if you dont since it sounds like it may be alot of work, worst case scenario I will do it some time this weekend. Thanks again.
