Very nice tute. Quite useful too, that TexMesh button. Never knew what it was for. Thanks.
thx Gimble! i’ll try it after i’ve let the dog’s out
WORST TUTORIAL EVER!!!
Just joking

That was a kick ass tutorial. Man! Blender had this feature all along? It is as powerful as softbody.
The problem is that Blender is so vast that the book couldn’t cover ever function in full detail. I recommend that this tutorial be submitted to Blender documentation, perhaps to be published in the next Blender manual?
Do you know perhaps a way to do heat waves?
cool! - some aha moments in there.

Who Let The Dogs Out!
very well written tutorial — thanks
Nice! Keep making tutorials like that and you’ll be loved.
I think you are already loved (at least by me)!
Great tutorial, this feature was missing from my life! Is it useable in ‘Global’ mode, or only in ‘OrCo’ mode? Ah, anyway, really great tutorial! You should write more on other functions as well! :Z
Thanks everyone for the comments. They are much appreciated
Sorry for the late response - I was working the kinks out of another tutorial:

(Many thanks to Alexander, BgDM, Oopz, UnNamed, and everyone at #blenderChat for the advice and tips)
Aorus:
Thanks. Yes, the TexMesh feature is quite usefull. It’s one of Blender’s features that I always meant to investigate eventually, but never got around to until ROUBAL asked about it in the Questions forum (The first image in the tutorial is actually from that post).
Job:
You’re welcome, and thanks also for your Ice effect tutorial.
/me wonders if the dogs ever got out.
toontje:
Yes, TexMesh is (almost) as old as Blender. It goes all the way back to at least version 1.5x, maybe earlier.
I’m not sure if it’s as powerful as Softbody, but it does have its uses.
I’ll have my agent contact the Blender documentation people
Though, I think that the manual would be 10,000 pages if they covered every Blender feature to this extent (at least for a book version); perhaps it could be added to the CD.
I’m not really sure about how to do heat waves, but there was a post by JB and theIcemAn with some ideas (The post is quite old, so perhaps there are easier/better options to create it now).

There was a post by M@dcow for re-creating the Matrix bullet effect. This could perhaps be adapted to simulate heat waves.

Also, I had an idea of using a plane (transparent and refractive) using Softbody and a Wind effect. (Perhaps combined with a texture to add a bit of random distortion) might create a nice effect.
tedi:
Thanks, i learnt alot of new stuff also.
jackblack:
Ah, who can forget that song (As much as I try)…
sornen:
Thanks sornen. I was expecting more “It’s too long and too image intensive” comments, but no mention of that, so I guess it’s fine
scorpius:
Thanks scorpius. I was hoping more for fame and fortune
Thanks for the displacement Python script. It still comes in quite handy for adding small details using the technique described in your tutorial at Blender Cafe. I don’t use the Import/Export scripts much, but I’m sure alot of people appreciate those, not to mention your Golf ball and Torus knots.
Temaruk:
You’re welcome any time.
Not sure about the Global mode, someone mentioned on IRC that it worked, but I couldn’t think of any applications for it, so I didn’t pursue it any further.
Added a couple more tutorials lately. Here you go:

Greetings Gimble,
Looking good so far [I’m in the midst of the texMesh tut] the only thing I noticed nit-picky though it may be is this… the singular of vertices is vertex, not vertice [I know 'cus I have to catch myself whenever I am talking about both at the same time
]. Other than that, it looks very blender documentation-ish 8) . I’m sure the folks who maintain the doc would be happy to include it
. Keep up the good work.
NC
Ok I have a question about the animation bit of the tut, Ok I got the dots to move, but on the curved plane they move straight across instead of going around the bend. How can I fix this? Thanks…btw great tut, I would have never found out some of the stuff on my own…
Well, it has been said before, but these look like very useful tutorials. Good job on those.
that is a lot of work put into that tutorial. great stuff.
you should get some sort of award. We should do that.
You rock dude!
thanks for helping blender comunity!
keep going, it´s really usefull!!!
Thanks again everyone for the responses.
ArmordGiant:
Whoops, sorry about that. I was aware of the vertice/vertices thing, but I did it anyway, because in some sentences it just “sounds” better.
For instance, one could say: “Open a UV/Image Editor window (or) Open an UV/Image Editor window”. Although the second one is grammatically correct, the first one sounds better. I will correct it though
Swaynisha:
I am not sure what the problem might be. Perhaps you mixed up the active and source meshes and maybe entered the active mesh’s name in the source mesh’s ‘TexMesh’ field instead of the other way around. (The active mesh is the one that you modify, the source mesh is the one whose texture space is used and “transferred” to the Active mesh based on the corresponding vertices). Hope that was it, if not maybe post the blend file somewhere and I’ll have a look at it for you.
