TV Show Set (For 45 minute puppets show later this year)

Hi all,

My current major work project is a 45 minute Christmas show featuring live-action puppets on a virtual 3D set, made in blender. We did all the primary photography on green-screen here, and rough-cut editing using temporary demo renders, and are now working on finalising the set details, rendering, animation, etc.

It’s quite complex (for us!). Each frame takes (average) 45 minutes to render, so as much as possible is being done as compositing rather than re-rendering. Basic compositing shots are done in Final Cut Pro, and complex (moving camera or more than 5 puppets at a time) shots in blender.

Lots of stuff is still changing, and there’s a lot of temporary items and so on which will be replaced.

At some point I’ll probably do some tutorials / walkthroughs of the more complex shots and interesting bits (Compositing 100+ puppets into the audience, moving lights, reasonably-realistic-neon, etc).

Feedback from my fellow blenderheads is appreciated!

Daniel

And here’s another shot with the band slowly being added in… (moving lights etc will be overlayed too…)

Ah I love it! In your demo renders, the puppet fits in so perfectly!

My only concern is the background behind the puppet. It is so colorful and contrast-y, my eye wants to look at that instead of the puppet.

Keep up the great work, I look forward to the updates!

This looks interesting!

Here’s some more bits and pieces. After the summer, things are picking up on the project again.

I’m super excited to be doing a talk at the Blender Conf this year, “Live Puppets in a 3D Universe”
where I’ll talk a bit about how we used blender, the good the bad and the ugly.

Here’s a bit of the compositing work I’ve done in blender:
