Two Birds: animated short

Here is my first animated short. It is 16 seconds long and took about 2 weeks off and on to create. I created this as a way to improve my understanding of Blender and learned a lot on the way. So take a look tell me what you think and be on the look out for more shorts to come.

lol that’s funny good job

how long did it take to render?

Thank you for the reply glad you liked it. The first time I rendered it at 4 parts both x and y non Divix and it took 3 hours to render. I wanted to take something out of the short so I then re-rendered it at 1 part both x and y Divix and took less than 1 hour about 52-55 minutes. So a major increase in render time second run.

Thx again Mux.

Very good Muxtun so far. Animation is never easy. Your Blender skills are good, but I would read up on animation principles. Get the How to Animate Film Cartoons by Preston Blair, that will teach you about weigh, recoil, overshoot and follow through. Very easy to read, thin book and it only costs about $10US.

For example to show moment and weight, when the bird lands his legs should bend and recoil, then he straightens up, overshoots before coming to his rest position.

Apart from that very good so far. Simple but effective story telling. Can’t wait to see your next instalment.

Nice job !

As Ozo mentioned when “Daddy” bird jumps and down, his body and legs need to bend and recoil. If you have a video camera, video yourself jumping up and down or look for references on the web.

Does the bird have “IK” legs? If not, that is pretty much a necessity in order to animate as described above. The “Intro To character Animation” Tutorial on the Blender Wiki will show you how to set that up, if you’re not familiar with how to do it.

The other thing is the bird flying by. He flies perfectly horizontally, i.e. maintaing exact altitude. Although the animation is a “cartoony” style, it would look better if he dipped down and upwards … i.e the body sinking down slightly in between wing flaps. You’re animation actually got me curious, so I’m looking for bird flight references on the web now.

As for the render times, I haven’t experimented with the “parts” thingy or noted differences for which render format is used. You could probably test it by rendering only a few frames instead of the whole movie. It’s also a risky and not a good idea to render directly to any movie format. You’re better to render to frames (png, jpg, tga …etc), then load the frames into the sequence editor and output to a movie format afterwards. That way you can 1) edit individual frames if necessary 2) restart the render if anything happens in the middle of the render process.

Mike

Thank you again for all the comments. The book referance is great for me. I find myself always wanting to do cartoon style work so I will look into that book and others to help me with animation. And Mike_S your right, It would make more sense to render each frame then put it all together so that will be the next thing I learn how to do in Blender. I new that ws an option but I havent even tried to learn how to do it. But will before I release any other animations. Thx again everyone.

looks nice, and is real short.

sorry for trouble

Dude, don’t hi-jack with pictures.

? I didn’t understand, what are you telling ?

don’t put your work (in this case, images) in other people’s threads. It’s impolite.

Awesome and good for you

Cheers!
