for some reason I can’t get packages I burned to CDrom (which is valid, I can get Blender and some other zipped or tgzed bins to work on my linux box nicely from the same CD) - to show in Synaptic AT ALL !!!
( I remember being able to just dblclick the *.deb’s earlier in my WinLinux days and - bang - things would install auto-magically : but not on ubuntu !!! ) RedHat6 was easier to get going … sheesh.
got wine installed. no love from CDrom, had to copy debs to hd. did it trough root console, with daniel’s command. now it shows in Synaptic as it should, as well.
strange - it ‘should’ work via apt-cdrom … o.k. next year
for some reason, deep paint and some other apps which have preload splash screens don’t start as should - they hang at preload, some of them so bad I can’t kill process to desktop and have to logoff. wine 20050725. shame. somebody knows any workaround - some secret setting that would surpress the splashscreen problems?
strange. deeppaint is listed in app database as ‘fully working’ …
@DanielP: do you perhaps know a way how to get all dependencies from repository to a CDrom to transfer to nonnetworked machine?
I thought of using live cd on other computer and somehow get the dependencies via apt … but don’t know how to back them up and make them work in nonnetworked machine.
I had it working some months ago (probably during May of this year), but never got to give a thorough work out. I was using Kanotix 2005-1 (Debian Sid) and it installed and ran very easily, as I recall.
I’ve since reformatted my HD and am in the process of installing newer versions of everything, including Wine. I’ll post here if I come up with any helpful bits.
BTW, I started off with Ubuntu, but ran into several “issues” (hard ware and software) so I switched to Kanotix.
@DanielP: if you ever run in a situation described (nonnetworked box) there I found a little info on how to backup synaptic cache: http://ubuntuguide.org/ maybe good may be bad …
and: I’m getting sdl-config related errors when trying to make blender.
which sdl stuff did you have to install? libsdl×.×-dev.deb and it’s deps?
@bigkahuna: that surprised me, too. I need deeppaint for a certain reason, wine listed in app database was 200505××.
I went back in time, installed older wine , but, again, no love.
Stops at splashscreen …
Did you get wine with Kanotix outofthebox or did you install it? Which version? Did sound work?
I have ubuntu cd set (and mandriva LE which doesn’t want to install …), but if somebody can recommend a distro that definately performs out-of-the box and has simple system of transferring dependancies from web/cds to non-networked box, please, recommend! I’d need some windows stuff to work on linux (alsa-oss, too. oss seems to work well on ubuntu).
I thought of going freebsd. Had it 2yr ago, for a shorter time, but it was snappy as f***, even Gnome which i like over kde. But I don’t have thet much time to experiment.
can’t get synaptic to connect to repositories properly from live ubuntu cd. damn. so it’ll be getting deps by hand.
EDIT: (sorry for spamming like that)
I suppose the only viable solution (except hunting deps ‘by hand’) would be to download and burn one of debian *.iso’s and put it in repository list of synaptic on my non-networked machine or use apt-cdrom add.
Can anyone point me on which debian iso should be libsdl1.2-dev.deb and it’s deps?
OR: is there a way to get all needed dependencies from internet from a windows machine? I searched http://packages.ubuntu.com , but things get messy because libsdl has deps which have their own deps not available from ubuntu cdrom.

Kanotix 2005-1 includes an older version of Wine which I updated using Synaptic Package Manager (from the Sourceforge Debian repositories). I used the Debian binaries and never tried to compile my own. At that time I was in the midst of installing a number of Windoze apps (Photoshop, Internet Explorer, etc.) and was getting help from the Wine newsgroup. I never tried any application that used sound, so I can’t say whether sound worked or not.
Incidently, the Wine newsgroup IMHO is the best resource for help installing Wine and apps. A number of Wine developers lurk there and are often able to fix problems like this…
problem is, for some reason apt (and synaptic) can’t acces web from my ubuntu liveCD - this way I could elegantly get deps. Firefox works, I’m typing this from liveCD. ( I could, however get them manually from packages.ubuntu.com )
bigger problem is, libsdl-dev’s deps have their own deps as well and it gets messy.
I was at some place yesterday with debian boxes and there’s a chance some problems ‘could’ be resolved by help of 3rd party. but this is a temporary ‘fix’, I’ll have to look for a definite solution (maybe in form of additional HD with ubuntu - or other debian distro - on my web computer so I could manage things that require internet connection).
