UI gets slow when I append a character to another blend

I’ve got a blend with a rigged character that includes cloth and softbody.
In another blend there is the set for the scene and some props.
When I append the rigged character to the set, moving the character gets exceedingly slow. I’ve tried to disable interactive softbody, cloth and subsurf, to no avail. I’ve also freed any bake, and there is no ipo nor action.
The character has around 150 Kfaces and the set around 100 Kfaces. Both work fine by themselves.
Any idea? Thanks in advance.

I’ve found the culprit: an object with a particle system in the set. After moving it to another layer, everything works fine.
