Unable to edit two mesh

Hi …For some reason I can not join two mesh. I can only enter edit mode one at a time. I have to get into object mode and the select the other mesh. I can not edit both at the same time… I am trying to tie in an eye mesh to a nose and mouth mesh.

Select two or more objects and CTRL+J
