Unable to fracture hollow object

I created an object in Rhino, exported it as an stl then imported that into Blender. Whenever I try to use the fracture object script (I just downloaded the latest Blender version, 2.63, today - 4/28/2012) the application goes into “hang state” for several minutes. When it is done, there is no object left that I can discern. Maybe there’s a null object or just a point, but certainly nothing left that I can use. I had left the settings at 5 shards and flat crack type.

Is there a problem with using hollow objects with the fracture script?

For the record, I am running Win7 64bit.
