Unable to stop selecting vertices behind objects

Fairly self explainitory, even when toggling “limit selection to visible” i still select vertices behind objects, any suggestions?

the ‘limit selection to visible’ is only valid for the mesh you are editing, all other geometry in the scene is ignored. So the head, although visible to you in the viewport, is not considered to be blocking anything. This is a limitation of b2.79. In b2.8 you can edit multpile objects simultaneously so selection occlusion would work as you expect there.

As a work around, you could duplicate the head mesh and join it to the ‘red’ mesh ( so they become one object) and it can act as occlusion geometry, then delete it when you’re done.
