Undead horse. Looking for advide on how to improve the fire

Dear Blender community,

How could I make this more realistic/badass?

Horse_gif

I’m transitioning from Maya to Blender so I’m not new to 3D software as a whole, but I’m not that experienced in Blender. I would love to learn more about particles and Mantaflow. I’m quite new to this whole thing and I would greatly appreciate any input you may have.

Here is what I’m trying to achieve and below is a still render of what I’ve got (version 2.83)

How could I achieve more variation in colour/brightness and have a more realistic shading of fire?
I have also been trying to figure out how to have fire come from one part of the mesh and smoke from everything else. What I’ve done now is duplicated the mesh, made it invisible in rendering and worked with vertex groups to assign fire to a part of it, so it would look like it’s coming from the same mesh as smoke. Is there a better way to do this? Is there a way to control all this from one mesh?

p.s. big thanks to the community for already helping me get this far
