that’s just a guess, but you probably have some particles that are half way through the hull, so they could make some funny clipping bug. I’m really guessing though, since I don’t think I ever had that problem personnaly.
What’s the difference between the regular renderer and the unified renderer? And when would you use one over the other?
Unified renderer is for halos with world setting…
Because in regular renderer, you will get black around the halos if you have world sky set with mist on.
Unified renderer will remove this problem and it is much better on halos than regular renderer.

regular renderer is fast because it renders in three stages normal materials then alphaed-materials then halos (if I remember well)
unified renderer make a single pass rendering.
the UR also clears the bug when rendering halos behind transparent surfaces.
