Unity-esque way of handling 2D sprites?

Hey all! RiokuTheSlayer here, wondering if there’s a way to handle sprites in a way simmilar to how Unity does? As of now, I have to model the plane I’m using according to the dimensions of the spirte, then make sure it’s mapped correctly, ect. Is there no easier way to work with 2D animations? Like a plugin or something? Also, if not, does anyone know a good, free 2D animator I could use?

There is an addon called Import Images As Planes that creates planes of appropriate dimensions, uv unwraps, and crates the material and textures for you. It is included in the official Blender; just enable it in your User Preferences.

Thanks a ton
