(and thatās one of a few similar stories I heard from Fab sellers in last few days )
Edit: I tweeted about it @Tim. If you care about that issue, please do the same (or at least like&retweet my post so it gets more visibility). (and yea, I know itās twitter and itās bad, but this is the only place that I seen Tim active)
Got another update for the Bridge app just now.
After installing, a message showed up I could claim all assets on Quixel.
I did, and apparently all the assets should show up at some point in 'Purchased".
Ohā¦ Be sure to claim the assets -both- in Quixel -and- FAB btw for continuity after jan. '25.
edit: It seemed to work. I now have 18.870 assets in my āPurchasedā section of Quixel Bridge.
Now that we have TONS of assets to **-legally-** play with in Blender, I looked into the old script for Quixel Bridge.
With some searching online and some tweaking of my own, I managed to get the script working for Blender 4.2. Or at least it works for the assets I tried here.
It still does some oddball stuff with Bump/Normal maps sometimes, but the basic textures are setup after exporting a asset from Bridge to Blender.
And depending on the LOD level, displacement is set or not. So check the material setting and shader setup after importing.
Use at your own risk, and maybe some other more experienced scripters can have a look at the code as well.
Fixed Bridge to Blender 4.2 script: init.py (30.7 KB)
Newer extension down in the threadā¦
So this one goes into the %USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\4.2\scripts\startup\MSPlugin folder.
If the MSPlugin folder is not there, create it yourself.
Just read through that thread and itās atrocious. I canāt even imagine how disappointing, frustrating, and outraging this must be for that dev.
Itās an absolute mess: a Polish dev, a Russian āAI Bro thiefā, the European HQ of FAB in Switzerland, and Epic based in the U.Sā¦
There isnāt really much that the dev can do. Heās relying entirely on the good-will of a giant borg corporation with an AI-bot ācustomer servicesā department. Nightmare.
And itās not just that situation. I read about more like those, e.g., https://x.com/sergeyiwanski/status/1863080382905618554 (another person reselling someoneās else content). And due to inaction of Epic I think there will pop up more of those.
Itās similar with quite a few big platform. Btw. Fab is not separate entity, itās Epic that has an office in Switzeralnd handling out of USA stuff:
"Epicā means one or more of the following, depending on where your Content is distributed:
a. to the extent your Content is distributed to a customer based in the United States, Epic Games, Inc., a Maryland Corporation having its principal business offices at Box 254, 2474 Walnut Street, Cary, North Carolina, 27518, U.S.A.
b. to the extent your Content is distributed to a customer based outside the United States, Epic Games Commerce GmbH, a Swiss company with limited liability having its principal business offices at Platz 10, 6039 Root D4, Switzerland.
In theory (and that worked in practice too in the past, and it works for other companies and marketplace) DMCA should work. Right now his only recourse would be to sue Epic (in USA or Switzerland), which would cost a lot I think.
I wonder why press havenāt yet written about Fab. This is perfect material for some article showing how big corporation messes up the launch of a big platform.
Main stream press: Not their demographic
Computer tech related press: Not enough clicks
3d related press: After enough stories trickle through, and then we see some reaction in the form of damage control.
Weāre just a tiny group in the grand scheme of things that is daily news.
Depends on how you look at it. Big corpo messing up stuff might be good for click. But I donāt really know. Just in case I just pinged the verge in one of my tweets
This is what large corporations hope that you do. Unless youāre willing to give up years of your life and possibly have it ruined through bankruptcy in the process, plus the stressā¦ itās a lose-lose. The international factor is awkward too, but I imagine it would be a far better option to go down the legal route in Europe as there would probably be more chance of success and less chance of it costing millions of $$$ in legal photocopying billsā¦
As you mentioned, the important part is the precedent. If this thief gets away with it with ZERO consequences and continues to sell a stolen product, then the platform is on borrowed time. No serious adult would want to use a platform like that. This is something that has to be ānipped in the budā, but by all accounts the management of that side of Epic seems to be pretty dreadful.
Update on those thieves that sold not their own assets: now they are gone (seems they were removed yesterday evening). The person from reddit made this update:
Update:
On late Friday I received an email from āEpic Games player supportā stating that my DMCA ticket was closed due to an error (emm the first, second or third one?). It was first communication I received from Epic at all. They asked me to fill in the gaps of missing information likeā¦ my company name and email address (by email. let that sink in). HOWEVER! Today at Monday 2.12.2024 I received another email from a different support email. This time from FAB Support. This email notified me that VELESA was taken down! Is it down for the period of 14 days or down for good? I donāt know.
(so maybe making noise on the internet does work?)
Seems that reporting works after all? I wonder. I purchased a FAB asset - Unreal blueprint to be specific. The blueprint does not work, it is not functional. I contacted the seller for support to fix the issue two weeks ago. He did not respond. I assume this one is also case to report?
I donāt think so. Even if you read the linked reddit report of that person that guy reported and DMCAed this case multiple times. Just after it got louder about they said 'it was mistake in our system". Similar for other cases I know off.
