Unroll plane with bones

Good morning, I need to create an animated 3D model to export in FBX format for Unity. I need to unroll an ancient codex (image plane). I managed to do it using curve-based animation, but this type of animation is not suitable for Unity. Could you help me?

Hi, this old thread might help: RIG QUESTION:Double Unrolling on Scroll - Simple or Not :)

Thanks, unfortunately it’s not helpful because the unrolling with the curve modifier doesn’t work well since I can’t export it to FBX for Unity. In the posts, they talk about armatures, but the download links are no longer active, so I haven’t found the solution. Can anyone help me?

Look further down the list of conversations there are some suggestions for bones rigging. Similar to the way the fingers/tail on characters roll.

not all animation needs to be bone based. You may be able to get away with vertex animation textures. See https://openvat.org/

I remember i tried that in this thread but it took me some trial and error to unroll a carpet with bones only

It’s actually very easy, took me 5 minutes to test. You just make a simple rig, do automatic weights, then set pivot point to individual origins, then rotate them all except for the first one until the last one touches the first in the chain that is selected, then unselect that bone, continue until next selected bone is touched, deselect it etc. When it’s rolled, you add a keyframe for all bones, then add keyframe at the end with pose cleared, then offset the keyframes of each bone in order to even distances so they will roll smoothly. If you need you can duplicate the first keyframe of each bone and move it to later, if you want them to stay totally stationary longer. Here’s a screencapture in x2 time:

Yep, you will never know until you try it.
