UnWheel 2 Driver Character

It’s been a long time since my last posted project, but here is my current one. I have been working in UDK since it came out, and here is my driver for my car mod.

I started this character last weekend. Starting last night and today I sculpted it, then tried to bake the normals to a low poly version. It worked, except the normalmap seems to have odd lines in it, like maybe for some reason it picked up hard edges from the low poly base mesh.

The normalmap is worthless with these hard edges! Anyone have a guess why the are rendered into the normalmap? (The normalmap is from the right and left leg.)

Have you set the low poly faces to smooth before doing the baking?

Good call AquaticPenguin, I tried to find Set Smooth in 2.54, but couldn’t;P This is my first 2.5 prodject and sculpt.

However, the helmet still has issues. I added one more subdivision to the sculpted mesh, and one level of subdivision on the base mesh; both helped the smoothness of the normalmap.

I was wondering why you have to bake from high poly mesh to low? Since I have already laid out my UV’s, why can’t you just bake the normals from the high poly mesh straight to a normalmap?

You can, but the (tangent space) normalmap only describes changes to the calculated surface normal. If you bake the hi-poly onto itself, the normal map will have no details, since the normals are perfectly described by the geometry alone.
Anyway, there’s no real reason why you would want to unwrap your hipoly if it is only for baking.
When baking, you get the best results if the hipoly is entirely encased by the lowpoly. If it is not, you have to tweak the bias parameter a bit.
You can use the edgesplit modifier on your lowpoly to make sharp edges.

omg this is soo awesome im alright at modleing just cant rig and unwrap properly to make some good stuff like clothes etc… im working on a chaos space marine atm but it looks like hes fake i cant texture him cos i dont know how to unwrap properly XD
