Unwrapping 3D Sphere onto 2D plane

I would like to unwrap an ordinary Blender Sphere onto a 2D plane so that the end-result looks similar to that of a world map when being unwrapped onto a 2D plane. In other words, I want a 3D sphere as a flat representation looking like a sequence of upward and downward directed triangles connected by a common center line (which is the circumference), where each triangle is subdivided by the faces of the original mesh. I hope you know what I mean with that. It is kind of hard to explain. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Here you go…

Blend files with various aspect ratios provided as well.

Hey thanks,

there I found what I was looking for. It was the Unfold Script function of Blender that I wasn’t aware of. After searching the forum again for “Unfold” I came across the tutorial “Creating Paper Models” which explains it perfectly and is all I need.

Thanks again
