Updating Objects Flags... For 24 hours and going strong. What does it do?

I created a scene with a few fluid simulations. The particle count between all the sims are quite high. I didn’t count, but I would estimate above a million.

When rendering I’m getting stuck at Updating Objects Flags and I’ve been stuck there now for about 24 hours. I assume it’s due to the high particle count.

It’s all fine as long as I know its getting past this stage at some point. Does it ever, or is it better to just close it? It’s not hung or crashed or anything. It’s just… Updating the Flags.

So a flollow up question. What does it do exactly? Technically. What is it about the particles that takes 24 hours to calculate? I mean, they are already baked once. They should already be calculated, no?

Thanks in advance for any insight!

It is related to this i guess:

It causes by using volumetrics on particles that are intersecting.
Afaik as workaround you have to avoid volumetrics or intersecting of your fluid domains.

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem. Fluid simulation and from frame to frame, “Updating Objects Flag” needs more time. Currently (Frame 120/200) over 2h per frame + render time. It’s so annoying :frowning:
