"Use Hair BVH" optimization is grayed out

A strange issue has been occurring for several months: Under the performance tab in the render window for Cycles, I noticed the option “Use Hair BVH” is always grayed out.

With how long Cycles renders take I don’t want to miss out on any performance improvement. Do you know what could be causing it to be disabled? I should note I use Blender on Linux, Manjaro OS in particular… my graphics card is an AMD and using the builtin amdgpu module.
