Using a driver on a material node not updating in cycles material view

I’m following this tutorial on making a day/night earth to help me brush up on how drivers work.

I have the whole scene set up now with the drivers and it’s working properly in a cycles render. However if I move the sun lamp around in the 3D view with material viewport shading mode turned on, the texture mapping mix doesn’t change. I would think that it would. Is this a limitation of Blender or am I doing something wrong?

It does work if I have the viewport shading mode set to rendered mode.

Yeah… this is the sort of thing that is very annoying if you animate textures and materials… you basically won’t see anything in the viewport. The exception to this being the UV Project modifier. This sort of thing is solved in EEVEE.
