So I am trying to figure out how to make a texture that would be mapped to an empty that would control the visibility of objects as they approach the empty. I tried fiddling with some blend textures but it just didn’t seem to work. Anyone got any tips or tutorials?:eyebrowlift2:

Sure, I have something better in fact (at least I hope so…) a .blend file! Made it real fast for you in Blender 2.56b. Just open it up and mess with it. Move the empty to control alpha fading on the cube in the middle of the camera view (you have to render to see the fading). Adjust the color ramp on the cube’s blend texture to affect the effect.
ProximityAlpha.blend (378 KB)
Well hope it is helpful,

Wow, that is amazingly helpful! Loads of thanks.
very strange
i don’t see the alpha changing but more a part of the cube disappear !
how come ?

To 90ender.
Your welcome! Glad I could help out.
To RickyBlender.
Well the alpha is the transparency of the object. Part of the cube is disappearing because the alpha in those parts is being dropped to zero by the blend texture on it.
yes but it is acting almost more like nodes Z buffer then alpha
i’v seen other driven alpha example where you really see the alpha change slowly and not completely disappear like in your file
so i find this strange to go from almost alpha = 1 to alpha = 0 instantly!
may be do it with an IPO curve where you it gives better control on the alpha value !

Ohhh… I see what you are saying. I am controlling the spherical blend texture that is mapped to the empty with a linear color ramp. That blend texture controls the cubes alpha. Using it that way you have very good control over the edge of the fading. I set it very hard so the effect would be immediately apparent.
it looks like you added empty as object to texture and set Alpha to it
but when moving the Empty it’s not linear in changing the alpha value
not certain why it is so exteme it should be more linear i think

ok understand a little more it was so extreme function of the Ramp itself
more then the alpha value!
how is it gong with the littl tut vidoe for making doc with gimp
Thanks happy 2.5
