Using an object within the same blend file, but in another Scene? / xreference

I’d like to protect a mesh from editing within my main Scene, by having it referenced from anothe Scene but from within the same blend file.

In some software this is referred to as an “xref” or “xreference object”. This is analogous to using a pre-comp in After Effects.

What is the procedure here? Thanks.

To clarify: Let’s say I have two Scenes in one blend file, “Main” and “Model”. I want to have the mesh in “Model” appear in “Main”, but NOT be editable in “Main”, only be editable in “Model”. And of course I want any edits in “Model” to appear in “Main”.
