Using Blend for more of a 2d anim/game

Just out of interest… as I’ve been thinking along these lines lately… but has anyone been making or checking out the 2d line of Blender?

I see alot of 3d models and animations and I like alot of them, but I’ve read about the vertex stuff blender can do and was wondering if anyone had made anything of this using blender?

The idea was have flat planes shaped the way I wanted to form arms, legs and make them seperate to animate them… or possibly have transparent edges and have a rectangle to control. The camera would be placed hanging above the scene… maybe controlable to zoom in if needed (or coded!0)… and maybe I’d need to have each screen as a seperate blend file to save trigger spots and events so you can return to the same screen but with different events or new doors belurgh balh ablahahah…

If I had a main background layer… possibly some extras like an FX layer and some pick ups… I was trying to get some animation and even attempt at getting a game involved… simple keys… left/right… up to go through doors and down to pick up etc… the story so far is quite bizzare but it’s really just afew stupid ideas at the moment…

would anybody know if this was possible… or even had a small go and got anything? I thought I may aswell ask and show some interest to the community… maybe even get some help if they liked my ideas :expressionless:

any comments are welcome…

ciao…

What you’re describing is called 2.5D.
It’s the same technique used in South Park.

I’ve done some stuff like this before, with billboard planes used for character animation, using hi-res TGA textures, drawn in flash, alpha-d in gimp.

I’m currently remaking that film, putting a little more effort in, but it’ll be a slow process, and blender & CG folks won’t be impressed by it, because there’s no explosions or naked chicks or anything like that --> it’s a psychological film, also very silly.

I did something kinda similar to what you’re talking about last year. I used a mixture of Blender and Combustion (a 2d video compositing program).

Here’s the original thread: https://blenderartists.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5225

And beatabix, don’t be silly. I love weird/silly/psychological stuff and I bet plenty of others do too. Don’t hesitate to show us

Are you sure that’s the right link? I don’t see anything by you in that thread…

Sorry to be OT:

Read my sig

:o gotcha! :o

OK, so you’re the person to tell that the top link gives 404 and the bottom link gives a DNS error.

Why are you no longer funkychild?

well, either he’s no longer a child, or he’s no longer funky

Ack more offtopic…
I’m no longer funkychild because I wanted to change my nickname but was too used to super-strict forums that don’t let you do that, so I just signed up for a new account. Only later realised I could have just asked in the Elysiun support forum. Oh well.

Hmm now that I check it, that URL is old. This one should have some pics: http://mke3.net:9000/pf/content/m_jb.html
Don’t know what the DNS error’s about though. The AVI works fine here.

There’s also the old ‘blacksmith’ demo file that shows how you can involve 2D animation in Blender, though the blacksmith demo is more about integrating 2D elements in a 3D scene.

I see some nice work on your site… not sure about the bright toon shading myself. The JohnnyB short wasn’t too bad… although I thought it’d be funny to see the snipers body (head and shoulders in shot) to fall next to the JB card with the bullet whole in it… just like it’d taken the card with the bullet… seemed very cheesy to me

and for a suave secret pro agent he widens his eyes alot… where’s the 1 eye brow raisers?

I also couldn’t find your blacksmith video… which was the one I seem most interesting… as it’s blender animating and composing

The blacksmith thing is a demo file that used to be on the old NaN FTP site.

I found it here: http://download.blender.org/demo/old_demos/ (blacksmith.zip or blacksmith.tgz)
