Using blender to get results for science

Hi Everyone (who reads this and thank you for doing so)

I’m kinda new to Blender but I’m a bit weird in that I’m using it for scientific purposes, rather than artistic. In fact I’m using it to calculate stuff for my masters/phd project (in marine biology and ecology) of all things. I was just wondering whether there are any other blender scientists out there who have used blender before in their methodology? Does anyone know of any projects that may have been posted in the forum? I’ve been trying to find at least one article that used blender or any 3D rendering program for calculation or even simulation purposes but I’m coming up with nothing but visualization uses…

Thank you kindly,
SaachiS

You may want to look into the work done by Dalai Felinto and Mike Pan. Their work tends to touch research and science fields pretty often.

I would be reluctant to use Blender for scientific purposes: depending on your research area, you want to be absolutely sure that Blender calculates what you want, which might be no easy task, even in open source. What looks good, might not be scientifically correct…

thank you! I’ll look them up right away

Yes I was dubious about using blender in the beginning, but I’m going to do real world experiments to compare the blender results and lend veracity for any future chapters. For now i’m only using it to calculate volumes of mussel aggregations so i’m not too worried. Blender’s being used in the palenotology department as well so the faculty can’t really cast their doubts…I hope. It would be a powerful tool for really quick experiments if it does prove to be accurate. Plus i don’t have to kill any invertebrates which is a major bonus that makes up for being slightly skewed
