The only person that can tell you what platform to choose is yourself. If the only requirement is to run blender in a stable environment, any OS can do that. Some Mac configurations have known issues, Linux will be a massive pain as you’ll require OpenGL and recent releases of X.org will require you to create an xorg.conf to use the proprietary drivers that provide the best OpenGL support. Windows is a PITA but it is a PITA that you know, so you have to choose what will work for you and your situation.
Yeah, it works well now, but in 10.5.2 it was a known issue even with Apogee hardware. Luckily with subsequent versions it was fixed. As for Logic being unstable, it something I’ve heard many producers say as well as from ersonal experience, but a lot of it is due to 3d party plugins (usually NI stuff which is buggy)
You best be joking http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=17
I would also recommend a 64bit Linux box due to the performance.
But when i’m on the road, i use blender on my MBP… In the end, both systems are just fine
So they made it work up to cs2? lol
Ill tell you what. Get me proof that the latest software can work and ill ditch windows. Also I like good looking GUI. All the months I spent using Linux I didnt find anything as far as themes go that had any kind of artistic touch. Everything looked like windows 95 lol.
I don’t know about you, but that link indicates to me that CS4 works.
As for the themes thing, in my opinion that is fairly true, but if you like Vista themes, there is no shortage of those! I think Ubuntu has an extremely nice interface element design (even with the bold colors!), and the default Gnome and KDE are none to shabby. Its when you start using TWM and FVWM where you come into trouble… ![]()
It indicates that CS 4 works but not all of the features. So basically its crippled under Linux.
Mac OS X is a great OS - some Mac only applications are great (iWork, Delicious Library, Motion, Bento, Aperture, Colloquy, Fontcase, iMovie, RapidWeaver, ScreenFlow, Things, SubEthaEdit, Versions etc.) without equivalent on other platforms.
As for Blender, it’s not that great on OS X. The good thing is that there are fewer redraw errors that on Linux’s X11, but there are some annoyances:
-Blender cannot run in 64 bits on OS X because it uses Apples older Carbon APIs, instead of the newer Cocoa APIs.
-The .blender folder with scripts and themes is inside the Application bundle itself, instead of /Library/Application Support/
-You can only open one Blender file at a time, unless you resort to the open-bundle-run-blender-executable hack.
-Blender doesn’t use the built-in menu bar, meaning you have two menu bars, which is unusual.
I use both Linux and mac. OSX has become my main platform because I get to use blender + the other apps I know and like without the need to dual boot.
The 64bit issue is a drag, but other than that blender runs quite fine on my macbook pro (latest version). And it’s nice to see that some small issues I’ve been having are not present in 2.5 anymore!
You can run many instances of blender on OSX easily by using ‘open -n blender.app’. No need to open-bundle-run-blender-executable like has been told.
Ok, I wasn’t going to get into a Linux flamewar, but this is just low. Linux can be customized to have some of the best looking desktops of any OS. Here are some example screenshots:
How about this: no one is trying to force you to use Linux. But don’t try to tell everyone that the problems you had with Linux were anything but specific to you and your hardware or your specific software. For many (most?) people out there, Linux works incredibly well.
Said in a far less assinine manner than I could have mustered. I commend you, sir! ![]()
Well, i think it still always depends of how much and how many things you’ll intend to do at a time… Some boxes will just not allow you to Work on a Blender file, render one or two others, record the sounds and sync them with your running cutting app… and go back and forth from one to the other when some changes need to be done… All that just right along the days and nights.
Preparing a special box is really great… But if i would try… i’d probably need several boxes running several OSs! Kind of spooky!
How about this: you stop reading between the lines?
All I said was that I didnt find any good looking themes while I was using Linux even though that I spend a lot of time looking for them. I DID NOT SAY THAT THERE ARE NONE. Im not yelling, just want to make that point clear to you as you failed to understand it once allready.
I understood you perfectly well. Maybe I was overly harsh in my reply. I understand that you had a bad experience(s) with Linux and just didn’t like some aspects of it. That’s fine. You can just say that it didn’t work out for you - you don’t have to keep complaining and making jokes about it.
I’m not some kind of Linux zealot either. My main OS is still Windows, and I’m just as likely to step in to defend any commercial software against unjustified complaints.
Take it easy dude.
All my artist friends recommend Mac.
REAL man use BeOS!
