Using edges as references for knife tool but along different faces

Hello,

I’m trying to intersect a rectangle with a cylinder (both with insetted features). Where they both intersect, I want them to be flush. Please see below, I want the red outlined areas removed:

I was trying to use the knife tool (with toggled constraint) and snapping to cut a projected edge from the rectangle to the cylinder (red - reference, blue - new edge) but I couldn’t get it to work.

Perhaps more simply, starting directly from an 8-sided cylinder, just a few cuts …
