Using P to separate my mesh causes one half to "solidify" and become uneditable.

Hi,
I’m attempting to follow the tutorial Create Realistic Cracks In 2 Minutes by Andrew Price.
I can recreate the model up to the point of initial separation (time 00.57). Then when I select one half and press P and Enter, the selected half becomes “solid” as if I was in Object mode. (Picture 1) I’m still in Edit mode at this point. It has an orangey coloured highlight. I cant do anything with it. No rotation or grab etc.
In the tutorial, both halves are still editable meshes.
I repeated the tute to this point and now it just gives the orangey mesh without the “solid” look. (picture 2)
When I select the other half, (picture 3) it does everything Andrews’ tutorial says it should.
What have I missed? How can I have Object mode for one mesh and Edit mode for another at the same time?

Would appreciate any help in where I have failed to perform a step in this simple (seemingly) tutorial.

Thanks
RD

When you press P , you’re going to make the selection as a separated object.

That’s what happened, the grey half is in fact a different object now, so if you’re still in Edit mode , it’s logical you can’t edit it because you’re editing another object at that point, so go to Object Mode, select what is now a different object and go into Edit Mode to edit it.

Thanks for your quick reply Sanctuary,
What you say does make sense. I tried it and I can follow the tutorial to its conclusion.
And I think I can see where he flicked in and out of Edit/Object mode at my sticking point.

I appreciate your help Sanctuary.
Cheers
