Using Sprite Sheets in Blender Internal/Cycles

Is it possible to use a Sprite Sheet in the Internal/Cycles rendering engine? I’m attempting to make an animation that includes randomly changing symbols that I’ve already UV mapped onto the object. I just need the UVs to animate along the sheet. I’m sure there is some Python out there that can do this, but most of what I find is intended for the Game Engine.

with the internal render engine you can use particles rendered as billboard. They support sprite sheet with the options that you need.

There is also the UVWarp modifier that allow you to modify/animate UV of objects, this one will be compatible with Internal render and Cycles.
