Using Textures to control density of strands

hi there !

Anybody know, how to control the density of grass/fur by using a
texture. I’ve seen the relevant buttons and played around with them
using several different textures (colored / gray / bw) but none of them
seemed to have influence on the density of the emitted particles…

btw, this is what i have so far…

solved it myself…
density of particles can be controlled by a weight map applied to the
emitter mesh…
