Using Videos and Audio in blends

I need some help using existing video files as backgrounds or textures.
the only files i seem to be able to use are videos rendered with blender.
When I want to be able to use live action video and add 3d elements to it.
I import the videos and it will not let me set the frames and all i see is a black screen in the preview window.

can anyone suggest a free conversion program that will change my videos to a compatable format?
I have a similar problem trying to import wav files into the audio system.

see the section in the wiki on Image Textures. That should help you for using animations as textures. When you set up the base material, be sure to enable shadeless.

see the seciton in the wiki on BackBuf, which has to be enabled, for using a background image or animation as a background. BackBuf is located in the Render settings, Output panel.

Sound is not output from Blender, but can be heard in order to sync up an animation to a video. see the wiki on Audio Sequences.

By “wiki” i mean the Blender wiki User Manual located here: http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/

I’ll check those settings again but what my problem is is that when i import an avi file it does not work unless it’s and avi created with blender. and when i try to import wav files I get an error message that says it’s an improper format or something. I had to use windows movie maker to add the sound to the video.

up till now I assumed my videos were either an incompatible version of the avi format or that they were too large.

there is no difference in avi’s created with anything, Blender or otherwise. All avi’s use a Codec, which is an OS extension that interprets the video stream. Are you using Backbuf, Image Textures, VSE, or Nodes? From what you say you want to do, you should start out using the Video Sequence Editor (VSE), documented here: http://mediawiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Video_Sequence_Editing

You Add your background Movie to Channel 1, your Scene as Channel 2, and Add the AlphaOver effect as Channel 3. The AlphaOver effect is documented two or so pages later.

When you say it does not work, what do you mean? It may be some other setting that is preventing you from seeing the video play. I use Blender as my video editing platform all day.

You will have to use MM to add sound to your video.

Hi knightfang, I am having the exact same problem. Avi’s that I make in blender or get from the internet load up fine, but when I use video from my camera I see nothing. If you figure this one out, please post how you did it.

When i load the video and click the movie button all I see is a blank black screen in the preview window and the area where you set the frame rates and number of frames to use will not even let me set the number of frames.
I’ll take a screen Cap of my problem and post it next time.

please do. there is no movie button in the Video Sequence Editor.

I assume you’re using 2.42a ??

Try JMS’s CVS (Windows) build which has FFMpeg compiled in it.

http://www.zoo-logique.org/3D.Blender/index.php3?zoo=com

You’ll need the Win32…zip file and the ffmpeg_code.zip files.

Mike

that might help, I tried using the video sequence editor and got an error message that said something about FFMpeg support not compiled.
I wasn’t using the VSE because with Avi’s created in blender all I have to do is add the file as an image texture in the materials section and click the movie button. and set the texture on the camera.
