UV map fitting question

Good day everyone,

Regarding LSCM unwrapping…

I’m having the problem where, if I unwrap an object - for instance an elongated cube - it doesn’t quite fit right in the UV/image editor window. Where one side of the object would be longer than the other, the UV editor window shortens the longer side, forcing it to fit the window.

Is there a way to fix this, so that the UV/image window would adjust to the actual size of the object when unwrapped?

My best suggestion is to create the seams strategically better. I almost always have to adjust an unwrapped-mesh in the UV/Editor.

There are a few buttons for unwrapping. Have you tried those?

Yeah, I understand what you mean by adjusting the UV’s,.I have to do this all the time. I’ve come to realize anything you bring in that window requires a little tweaking.

But, I guess what I’m concerned with is that any particularly large object/mesh is constricted to the size on the UV editor window when the mesh is unwrapped. I don’t think there’s any way around that…

There’s an option in the UV Editor under UV’s “Layout clipped to image size” you probably need to turn off.

There may be an answer in using pins to solve your problem.

There seems to be a new implementation of LSCM in the Orange branch that may output something different for you - http://www.blender.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7824 - a bit bleeding edge but you can probably do the UV coords in Orange and reopen in 2.4/2.41

As you can see, out of the two faces I have selected, the longer is constricted to the square.

I have yet to try out other suggestions, but I just wanted to get this posted.

When you lscm unwrap make your cuts and then select ALL the faces before unwarpping. Here is what I get:



GreyBeard - Sorry, but I’m stiil having the same issue. I know I’m probably missing a small, vital step. I selected all the faces before I unwrapped.


How have you applied the scale? In edit mode or object mode?

I am guessing it might have been done in object mode in which case you need to apply the scale [ctrl]+a or [shift]+[ctrl]+a … I think

I believe purple is correct – apply size and rotation ctrl-a
